Apparatus

  • Oven - capable of maintaining a temperature of 110 ±5 degrees C (230 ± 9 degrees F) for drying the sieve analysis samples
  • Balance - conforming to the requirments of AASHTO M231
  • Stirring apparatus - mechanical electric apparatus, capable of turning the vertical paddle shaft at a rate of at least 10,000 revolutions per minute. The shaft should be of such a length so that the mixing paddle is between 19mm (3/4") and 37.5mm (1.5 ") from the bottom of the dispersion cup. Air jet dispersion devices may also be used and are discussed in further detail in AASHTO T88.
  • Hydrometer - ASTM hydrometer, calibrated to read either in units of specific gravity or in grams per liter in suspension, conforming to requirements for hydrometers 151H or 152H. This text will discuss the calculations used for hydrometer 152H, measuring grams per liter in suspension, since these calculations are slightly less involved than those used with hydrometer 151H.

  • Sedimentation Cylinders - glass cylinder approximately 460mm (18 ") in height and 60mm (2.5") diameter and marked for a volume of 1000 mL.
